Sunday 23rd April 2017 was one of those rare training days at Wazalendo Hockey club as the club hosted Mr. Erik van der Dussen, an Associate Director at Deloitte East Africa in Nairobi, Kenya and an ardent fan of Field Hockey. Mr. Erik was attracted to Wazalendo Hockey club by the clubs Young Players Development (YPD) Program.
Mr. Erik van der Dussen comes from a very hockey rich town in the Netherlands. When he arrived in Nairobi, he sought to quench his thirst for the game and thus took a stroll out of his office to search for the artificial green grass. This only landed him at the City Park Hockey Stadium, in contrast to his home in Netherlands, the only Astro turf in the East African region. It was at the stadium that he met some of the youngstars from the Wazalendo Young Players Development (YPD) program. Thrilled by their level of hockey skills at a young age, Mr. Erik inquired of their background that eventually connected him to Wazalendo Hockey Club.
Mr. Erik brought with him a bunch of goodies in aid of the Wazalendo Young Players Development (YPD) program that produced the young stars he met at the city park hockey stadium.
The YPD program is a social transformation program that uses the game of field hockey to bring about change in the lives of children from the informal settlements around the South B estate in Nairobi. The program has now attracted more than fifty (50) new entrants at the beginning of the year 2017. This follows the steady success of the program over the years and producing a couple of the players that participated in the National Secondary Schools field hockey games for both girls and boys that ended on 15th April 2017 at State House Girls Secondary School in Nairobi.
Wazalendo Hockey club had 15 young players distributed in four out of the eight schools that participated in the tournament as shown below:
|SCHOOL||NUMBER OF PLAYERS (from YPD)|
|Kerugoya Girls Secondary School||3|
|Musingu Boys High School||8|
|Upper Hill Boys High School||3|
|Dr. Ribeiro Parklands Boys High School||1|
During the visit, Mr. Erik van der Dussen donated an assortment of track suits, hockey shoes, hockey sticks, hockey balls as well as one set of goalkeeper’s kit. These will go a long way to help the club augment the equipment available for the development of the young players.
Wazalendo hockey club was very grateful to Mr. Erik van der Dussen for his gesture and promised to work with him to help bring more children into the game.
