Having lost to Strathmore via a last gasp goal, chances of qualification for the playoffs seemed far-fetched for Wazalendo. This could only be achieved by beating the Kisumu based club, Bay, with a margin of 5 goals in the last preliminary match of group.
Wazalendo showed intent earlier on as Frank fluffed 2 chances in the first minute of the match. A couple of wasted chances ensued as the Wazalendo forwards struggled to keep their cool in front of goal. Wazalendo’s stalwart, James Mwangi, finally got a crack at goal and opened the flood gates with a coolly taken short from a penalty corner.
Wazalendo added 2 quick fire goals to lead 3-0 within 15 minutes of the first half. Bay’s danger man Calvin pulled one back for the visitors but Wazalendo replied with 2 more goals, ending the match 5-1 at half time.
After a slow start to the second half, Bay scored their second goal in the 50th minute from a poorly defended penalty corner, slimming Wazalendo chances of qualification. However the never say die attitude of the Wazalendo players saw them add one more goal with 2 minutes on the clock, in a poacher’s fashion, as Joel picked a loose ball passing it on to Frank who broke the hearts of the Bay supporters. 6-2!
Wazalendo’s search for a 7th was futile as the final whistle blew much to the confusion of the Wazalendo camp as no one had quite the assurance of qualification to the playoffs. With a 4 goal difference from the match yet on same points with Strathmore, everyone gathered in a circle to perform the routine warm down unsure of what their fate would be. As it stands we all await the outcome of the hockey union.
